Discover Your Dream Career and Make a Living Doing It

Do you dread going to work? Does life for you seem to be an endless cycle of hitting the snooze button, crawling miserably out of bed, driving to a job you loathe, and going through the motions at work just to pay the bills?

Maybe you earn some extra cash only to return home to rest for a bit, wake up, and go to the exact same job you you’ve been complaining about your whole career. That’s life for most of us. This sounds crazy right? Forbes recently reported that 52.3% of Americans are dissatisfied with their jobs. Well, 52.3% of people employed in America are apparently crazy. I've met too many people who worked so hard to have tons of money, at any cost, that when they finally achieved financial wealth, they then realized that even seven figures wasn't worth a lifetime of unhappiness and misery.

So many kids are raised to believe that when they grow up, their future job has to inevitably be boring and soul crushing and that only a select, lucky few get to do something they really love. The rest of us have to settle for a job that 'pays the bills,' working to support other people's businesses and dreams. But a bright future of work you love is not about luck, it's about work and persistence. It may seem to be a secret to some, but you can do something about it. You are not stuck. If you’re just coming out out of high school or college and have no idea what you want to do, that’s okay. Even if you’ve been at this dreaded job your whole life, it never too late to get out there and start living while you’re working. Wouldn’t it be incredible to actually get out of bed every morning with a smile on your face, looking forward to the day ahead? Wouldn't it be a life worth living if you could earn money doing what you love? Anyone can find a way to do what they love if they only take the effort to pursue it. A dream job isn't something hidden away that is almost impossible to attain. It's actually pretty easy to get, you only have to want it bad enough and be persistent in pursuing it.

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be?”

- Marianne Williamson

It is understandable that you may not know how you could make a career out of what you love yet. It can be overwhelming and even scary to just think about what you have to do to change careers, let alone begin taking the actual steps towards doing what you love. The great thing is, you don't have to know the answer to these questions or know the exact path to get there yet, you only need to know one thing - the why. 'Why?' is the question that most of us never ask ourselves. Take the time to ask yourself the reason why you would want a fulfilling career that you enjoy. What will work like this do for you? How will your life be different as a result? This is the most important thing to start with. As Tony Robbins has said, “If you find a big enough why, you’ll find a big enough how!”

The next most important question is "what are you passionate about?"

Your passions are more than random things that happen to interest you. The things you get excited about, that you love, or that make you happy are not some passing fancies you should just ignore and only do when you have free time. The things you love and the things you are good at are what you are meant to do with your life. A good place to start is to look at the skills and passions you already have and how you might be able to use them to support yourself and the life you want to live. And when talking about what you really want to do, what you want to become, you don't get to say, "I want to watch TV all day and eat Cheetos." I won't let you - you might not be completely unhappy with that, but you certainly wouldn't be happy. I promise that you won't - there is no meaning to that kind of life. Your life needs more meaning to it for you to feel happiness and importance. A life of contentment and doing what makes your heart skip is surely better than a life of waiting, regret, and doing what you hate over and over, no matter the monetary cost.

"You are not here merely to make a living. You are here in order to enable the world to live more amply, with greater vision, with a finer spirit of hope and achievement. You are here to enrich the world, and you impoverish yourself if you forget the errand."

-Woodrow Wilson

You don't have to have your path there entirely mapped out, that would be much too daunting and would be difficult to stay motivated that way, you just need to take the first steps. You don't have to quit your current job and go full force into this new, great adventure of yours, you just have to lean into discovering it and immersing yourself in it. Put your feet in the water before you dive in headfirst. Practice this thing often, learn about it, read books about it, surround yourself with like-minded people who all enjoy the same thing that you eventually want to turn into a career. These are all fantastic first steps and if you take them and do them often, the opportunities will eventually start presenting themselves. You will read books that will teach you something new or meet people that may provide opportunities or give you a step up. Teach your skills to others, open an online store, start a blog on this topic, take some courses, join a club with similar interests on the weekends, or even volunteer - and you can do all these things on the side of your current job that 'pays the bills' until you are ready to take things further. You don't have to overwhelm yourself, you just have to take the first steps.

Life's short. We can't afford to allow ourselves to settle for hating life for 40 hours a week and dreading it for the rest of the time that we have off. Once you begin the journey toward the career of your dreams, you'll feel good about even the smallest progress made. Growth in this field may be slow to begin with, but over time you will notice your advancement will be like that of a snowball rolling down a mountain, gaining speed as it moves along its path. Once you get started, it's gonna be hard to stop you! Give yourself a great career that you get excited about and actually look forward to every day, and you will live a great life and nothing less!
